About Tigireksky Nature Reserve

Established in 1999, Tigireksky Nature Reserve is located in the Altai Krai region of Russia, encompassing a variety of terrains including forested mountains, river valleys, and meadow steppes. The reserve is part of the West Siberian forest-steppe zone and plays a vital role in preserving the biological diversity typical to this transitional ecological area. The landscape is marked by the Tigirek Ridge, featuring dense Siberian cedar and pine forests, interspersed with mixed broadleaf species. This area is a habitat for many rare and endangered species such as the Siberian musk deer, Far Eastern leopard, lynx, and a diverse bird population including raptors and woodpeckers. The reserve supports a natural equilibrium that allows for effective conservation of both flora and fauna, contributing significantly to Siberian ecological studies. Visitors to Tigireksky can partake in guided hiking tours along well-maintained trails that provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. The terrain is moderately challenging, making it suitable for intermediate hikers and those interested in ecological tourism. Cultural significance is also notable as the reserve area contains sites of indigenous heritage. Due to its strict protection regime as a zapovednik (strict nature reserve), access is regulated, but it offers a uniquely immersive experience into one of Siberia’s most unspoiled wilderness areas. This remoteness and intact nature make Tigireksky a critical location for scientific research and nature conservation.
